Enjoy a Historial Stroll Through Carrick-on-Shannon

Signposted walking tours and this informative historical guide will assist you as you explore the historical treasures of Carrick-on-Shannon. You will discover the many  interesting historical buildings in particular; the Workhouse and Famine Graveyard, Hartley Manor (a restored Georgian period home of the St. George Family), St George's Church of Ireland and Visitor Centre and the Costello Chapel which is believed to be the smallest chapel in Europe and second smallest in the world. The Dock Theatre

The Dock is housed in the beautiful 19th Century former Courthouse building, overlooking the majestic river Shannon, which has been wonderfully restored into Leitrim’s first integrated centre for the arts. The Dock houses a 100+ seat performance space, three art galleries, artists studios, an arts education room and it is home to The Leitrim Design House.

St.George's Heritage & Visitor Centre was officially launched early 2008, which includes audio/visual functions in the centre adjacent to the church. The restored church, houses a well researched and exciting historical display of artefacts and interpretive material depicting the twin traditions of Leitrim from ancient Gaelic roots through Plantation times up to Leitrim's contribution and Sacrifice in the Great War. This is seen in the context of Carrick on Shannon development as a town; and the minimal but historically accurate restoration of the Workhouse Attic, in which it is reported that 1896 poor souls deaths were recorded. The Costello Memorial Chapel is the smallest chapel in Europe and the 2nd smallest chapel in the world.
It was built in the 19th century by Edward Costello, a rich merchant, as a memorial and burial vault for his wife, Josephine who died two years previously. It is sixteen feet long, 12 feet wide and 30 feet high. Each side of the aisle holds a coffin lined with lead and covered with slabs of thick reinforced glass. The remains of Josephine (1889) and of Edwards who died in 1891are both interred in this beautiful memorial

Boardwalk and Marinas

Directly across from The Landmark you will find Linear Park; a beautiful riverside park area with cycle paths and paths to stroll along. There is a Boardwalk  that extends out over the River Shannon with wind chimes that provide a mystical musical backdrop. You'll find families of swans, the new Marina, beautiful flora and ample seating where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. Arigna Mining Experience

Discover and experience the life of a coal miner through this underground tour.The Mining Experience Centre provides visitors with a unique insight into what coal mining life was like in the Arigna Valley, since its beginning in the 1700′s until closure in 1990. During the underground tour, visitors will experience what it was like to work in some of the narrowest coal seams in the western world. The tour which lasts 45 minutes brings visitors to the mines coalface where the methods used to extract the coal are demonstrated. Lighting and sound effects throughout the mine add to the reality to the experience.

Strokestown Park House & Famine Musuem

Strokestown Park is a unique visitor attraction in Strokestown. Co Roscommon, 24 miles from Carrick-on-Shannon. The Park includes; Strokestown Park House, a Georgian Palladian mansion preserved with its original furnishings and fabrics which can be seen daily by guided tour, The Irish National Famine Museum and the six acre walled pleasure gardens which have been restored to their original splendour and give an insight into horticultural design and architecture from the 1740’s to the present day. Henry Packenham was an avid gardener and travelled extensively, gathering plants and seeds from around the world. Many of these exotic plant specimens can be seen growing in the walled gardens today. The walled gardens include features such as the herbaceous border, the fernery, the lilly pond, the Victorian rose garden, pergola, peach house, vinery, fruit and vegetable garden and herb garden to name but a few.

Strokestown Park is a must see attraction, whether for individuals, families, educational groups or coach tours. The Cavan & Leitrim Railway Museum can be found in Dromod, just 18km (17mins) from Carrick-on-Shannon. This wonderful museum displays a collection of trains and railway memorabilia and also a range of other historical treasures including Buses, Planes, Fire Engines and Artillery

King House Interpretive Galleries & Museum

King House is a magnificently restored Georgian Mansion built around 1730, by Sir Henry King, whose family were one of the most powerful and wealthy in Ireland. In the 18th Century it was home to the Earls of Kingston. After this it became a military barracks to the famous Connaught Rangers from 1788 until 1922. Today visitors can explore the house and enjoy a range of exhibitions that offer an enchanting view of Ireland’s heritage and culture.

Lough Key Boat Tours
